Lille National Orchestra
In the soft glow of autumn, Matthias Goerne invites a selection of his favorite composers and trusted artistic partners to join him in creating a memorable performance.
With the Orchestre National de Lille under the baton of Joshua Weilerstein, he will delve into the world of Mahler; alongside Iddo Bar-Shai, he will explore the lyrical universe of Schubert. Ravel’s Les Contes de ma mère l’Oye will serve as a gateway to some of his favorite contemporary composers. This is a tailor-made program where the clarity of the writing and emotional equilibrium of each piece are brought to light, revealing both the dreamlike quality of the texts and their underlying tensions.
Saturday 13 September at 6pm – Dome of the Great Stables
Like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau before him, Matthias Goerne shares a rare intimacy with Schubert.
It’s impossible to discuss a Schubert lieder cycle without acknowledging Matthias Goerne, who has devoted much of his career to the composer’s work. Schubert’s second major song cycle after La Belle Meunière, Winterreise (Winter’s Journey, 1827), marks a return to the poetry of Wilhelm Müller. Its tragic expressiveness, its very desolation, where yesterday’s joy is perverted by today’s pain, is admirably served by the profound musicality and sense of storytelling of Matthias Goerne and Iddo Bar-Shaï.
