Ingres, a visionary and unclassifiable painter

A prominent artist of the early 19th century, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was a visionary painter who defies easy classification. Beneath his outward classicism lies a striking originality and relentless pursuit of perfection that continue to captivate viewers.

With the advent of the July Monarchy (1830-1848), Ingres enjoyed substantial support and a favourable environment in the Orléans family, enabling him to produce some of his greatest masterpieces. Originating from national and international collections, paintings and drawings commissioned or formerly owned by the Princes of Orléans will be reunited in Chantilly, alongside their sketches and variants.

New analyses of some of the artist’s most important masterpieces, as well as previously unpublished or rediscovered works, will shed new light on the unique personality of one of the great figures in the history of art.
